Hale to the Champions
May 13, 2009 - Seth Staskey
The chase for the OVAC hardware began back in August and now, it's the middle of May and all of the trophies have been presented to the winners.
What a year it's been in OVAC athletics. From championships to Sports World Speakers to new members to heated competition, the OVAC has offered a little bit for everyone.
It's tough to pinpoint one certain memory from this past school year, but this spring it's been all about weather wreaking havoc with spring sports schedules and D.J. Duke and Stephanie Morgan proving they are in a league of their own in track and field. It's safe to say those two are eventual locks for the prestigious OVAC Hall of Fame. However, they will have to wait until at least 2019 to be admitted.
The OVAC expansion is something that has confused a lot of people and trips to Morgantown Trinity and Parkersburg won't be easy, but they are members and should have all of the rights and opportunities that schools in Ohio, Marshall and Belmont Counties have and we're certain they'll be able to fill schedules to be able to compete in the tournaments.
This weekend, OVAC champions will be honored by Ogden Newspapers when they are treated to 'Day of Champions' at PNC Park against the Rockies. Getting the opportunity to walk on the field of a Major League Baseball team is an opportunity few get, but thanks to the area newspapers, the Pirates and the OVAC, the opportunity is here.
Then on Monday, one final salute is given at the annual Banquet of Champions at WesBanco Arena.
Soon after Monday evening ends, work on 2009-10 will begin and another year of memories will be yielded.
