Where will this gas price gouging run end?
May 18, 2009 - Michael Palmer
The unofficial beginning to summer is Memorial Day Weekend that means gas suppliers and retailers are getting ready by excessively raising prices.
After an unexpected cut in gas prices during the elections, we again see gas prices climbing higher and higher.
There are laws that allow the government to go after price gougers who are looking to make a quick profit off of drivers at the pump by artificially jacking up prices but the same legislators refuse to close the loophole in futures trading that allows oil companies to fill their pockets with record profits.
Unemployment is running rampant and more financial analysts are predicting a second great depression in the near future. The budgets of our valley residents are stretched to the max just trying to make ends meet. Allowing oil companies to gouge working Americans while the government pours billions into saving the even more greed oriented banks is treasonous.
The government won’t allow payday loans because they charge too much interest, but they stand by and do nothing as credit card rates rise and banks, who disguise their payday loan interest rates as overdraft fees, get away with what amounts to legalized robbery of the working class poor.
The same congressmen and women who consistently vote themselves raises are now putting a freeze on Social Security benefits for the next two years. That action alone should send a clear message to the rest of us that we are once again on our own in this crisis.
