Sunday Yard Olympics
June 9, 2009 - Kim Collette
Last week, I listed the things I look forward to in the summer. Now, I'm wondering why I said yard golf and bocce ball!
My boyfriend (who no longer wants to be called Batman) and I wanted to enjoy our "lazy" Sunday, but weren't sure what we wanted to do. We started to watch a movie......then, duh.....the light bulb went on! It was finally a nice, sunny day.....85 degrees! Why weren't we outside?
We broke out yard golf and bocce ball. Let me tell you this......One, it really brought out my competitiveness and Two, it really is showing me my age!
I'm a very competitive person.....from a very competitive family. My brother and I have shirts that say "I CAME HERE TO WIN." At first, I didn't care if my boyfriend beat me. Really, I didn't......but once we got midway into our first yard golf game...AND he was beating me...I realized I REALLY WANTED TO WIN. AND NOT JUST WIN BUT PULVERIZE HIM!
And...I didn't do either of the above! He actually beat me! Wowzers! He had never played the game before. Then, to top off his win he taunted me! The nerve! That was it for the boyfriend winning. My competitiveness level increased like Bruce Banner becoming the Incredible Hulk.
Next was bocce ball...my poor boyfriend didn't stand a chance. I rolled my bocce balls towards the pallino with determination and accuracy. I couldn't help but trash talk just a little bit (I mean what fun is winning if you can't brag a bit?). And....of course I finisihed him off.....winning the bocce ball game!
After a quick waterbreak we decided to play a rubber match. I KNEW I was going to win no matter what....So, I let my boyfriend pick his poison...and to no surprise he chose the game he won, yard golf.
I almost felt bad for him. Once I'm in the zone, I go for the "kill". The second game wasn't even close. I won 21-6! Winner, winner! Champion of the day!
Now....I'm ecstatic that I won...and beat my boyfriend doing so (which I must say it is more fun to beat a guy than a girl in any sport). But, that competitiveness is making me feel old today. My legs are sore. My tossing/rolling arm is sore. I'm walking a tad bit slower...It hurts to get up from or sit down in a chair. I think I even heard the little guy in my head say "What did you do to me?"
Soreness and all.....we both had a blast playing and enjoying the beautiful day. Up next? Maybe, just maybe, we'll break out the cornhole this weekend so I can beat my boyfriend again!
Until next time friends!
