Hell's Kitchen vs. The Next Food Network Star
July 27, 2009 - Kim Collette
I absolutely hate to cook. It is definitely one of my least favorite things to do. So it may be a surprise to all of you (as it is to myself) that two of my favorite shows right now are cooking shows!?! The two shows I'm hooked on.....Hell's Kitchen and The Next Food Network Star.
But, which one is the best to watch? I guess it all depends on the "reason" you're tuning in!
Hell's Kitchen: If you are watching this show to learn something about cooking.....STOP! Yes the so-called chefs (who many are line cooks, home cooks or flat out bad cooks) cook, however, the food doesn't really play a roll on the show. We never really know what's on the menu at Hell's Kitchen. Nor is there EVER a lesson for the viewer on how to cook the risotto (if anyone really even wants to) that is always being served. C'mon at least give us prompts at the bottom of the screen or post the dishes and directions on your website! So then....what is the point of Hell's Kitchen? The "winner" gets a contract as an executive chef at an exclusive restaurant. In order to win, the contestants have to survive the competition by pleasing Gordon Ramsay. They must do things his way and cook his dishes. Not to mention survive (and I do mean survive) Chef Ramsay yelling at you like he's Gunnery Sergeant Hartman, the drill sergeant from Full Metal Jacket. A few things you can always count on during Hell's Kitchen.....Chef Ramsay won't like the food the contestants are sending to the pass, he will curse out the contestants, close the doors to his fictious restaurant and send his fake customers home.
If you like to watch regular Joes deal with more adversity than you do on a daily basis, Hell's Kitchen is the show for you.
The Next Food Network Star: This show is definitely about finding a new personality to add to it's already impressive lineup of stars. And guess what....these contestants can actually cook! The contestants on this show are vying for their own show on Food Network. So, not only can they cook, but they can entertain and teach the viewers at home in the process. Even while competing the contestants have to do "demos" preparing their dishes. These little demos teach viewers some cool tips even before a winner is chosen. Food Network executives Bob Tuschman and Susie Fogelson are joined by my favorite Food Network Star, Chef Bobby Flay, as judges. They clearly know how to find a personality that truly does have culinary skill.
If you want to watch a competition and still learn a little about cooking, The Next Food Network Star is right up your alley. Plus it has become very real. Have you ever seen Guy's Big Bite, Diners,Drive-Ins & Dives, Big Daddy's House or Will Work For Food? Guess what they all have in common.........You got it! They are all hosted by winners of The Next Food Network Star.
If you want an hour of pure entertainment....choose Hell's Kitchen. But ask yourself this question: Would you rather eat something cooked by the winner of The Next Food Network Star or eat at Hell's Kitchen? Easy one to answer if you ask me!
Until next time friends!
