Football with Class
August 27, 2009 - Seth Staskey
Ohio State University and head coach Jim Tressel came out this week and encouraged all of the Buckeye fans in attendance for Sept. 5's season-opening game against Navy to applaud and cheer for the Midshipmen as they take the Ohio Stadium Field.
That's a tremendous idea and hopefully the people take heed to the advice and participate. Obviously, fans will want the Buckeyes to win the game, and so do I, but for crying out loud it's a service academy.
Let's not forget that very few of the players on the field for Navy will be going on to play in the NFL. They'll be going on to defend the country in this extremely volatile time around the world. They signed up to do that. Not only are they good at football, extremely intelligent (because you don't get in if you're not), they are extremely brave and patriotic.
Those are qualities that every American should have. Again, kudos to the OSU Athletic Department and football program for coming up with such an idea. Hopefully on Sept. 6, we're able to give kudos to the OSU fans for taking part.
When Navy takes the field at about 11:50 that morning in preparation for the noon kickoff, think about the seniors on the field. Next year, when you are on your couch watching another OSU opener or even fortunate enough to be at the Horseshoe, those young men could be in Afghanistan.
Where would you rather be?
