October 7, 2009 - Kim Collette
1:30 a.m. That's the last time I saw when I glanced at my clock last night. My eyes were burning and straining to stay open. I'm losing more and more sleep. And....when I do sleep it's not good sleep. I show up at work with those lovely "bags" under my eyes. You know what.......I blame the DVR!
I'm torn between thinking the DVR is the greatest thing since sliced bread or thinking that it's more evil than the firey pits below. (For those of you who don't own a DVR and have absolutely NO idea what I'm talking about: the DVR records programs directly to your cable box. I think of it as an upgraded and better version of the VCR.)
Is this the greatest invention since sliced bread? I do know that it makes life for a t.v. glutton (like myself) much more convenient and simple. Gone is the hassle of buying VHS tapes. Gone is the hassle of programming a VCR. Gone is the agony of which show to tape if the shows are on at the same time....or if they are on a different times and different channels. Now.....DVR it!
I basically set my DVR with a quick push of a button and forget about it. The series recording feature makes sure I NEVER miss a new episode of The Mentalist. Even when I am home the DVR simplifies life. When my stomach growls at 8 p.m. for a bit of chocolate.....not a problem anymore! I pause the show and grab a Reese's Cup. When I get back to my "worn" in seat cushion I push play and I don't miss a second! If I glance away from the big Ohio State game....not a problem anymore! I rewind the part of the game I missed and watch it! I sometimes even (just because I can) watch it in slow motion! Go DVR!
But, is this more evil than the firey pits below? Sometimes I think it is! I record more shows now that I actually have time to watch. So....that's how I find myself looking at the clock at 1:30 a.m. and shaking my head. I know you are probably thinking..."you are an adult Kim. Turn off the t.v. and go to bed." But....I just love t.v. shows and have to keep up to date to see who eveyone liked on Dancing With the Stars.....right? And...with this little contraption you can "bloop" (thank you Meghan and Brad for expanding my DVR terminology) through commericals. In fact, I don't think I have watched a commercial since May. Now...it only takes a around 40 minutes to watch an hour long t.v. show! The other evil thing about the DVR is I find myself watching shows that I swore I would NEVER watch (i.e. Project Runway). So...not only am I watching more shows and losing more sleep....I am also watching ridiculous programs!
Now....my conclusion....I LOVE my DVR! There are no more fights with the family or the boyfriend on what show to watch....I DVR mine just in case! There is no more stress about American's Next Top Model and So You Think You Can Dance both airing at 8 p.m. ....I DVR them both! I never will miss another episode of Grey's Anatomy, Private Practice, Criminal Minds or Army Wives becasue the "tape" didn't work or I forgot to rewind it....I DVR the series so I don't forget!
If you don't have one.....I say invest in one immediately! You'll love it....Just be forewarned that you too may experience sleepless nights!
Until next time friends!
