October 13, 2009 - Seth Staskey
At this point, I will eat some crow. The St. Louis Cardinals were swept by the Dodgers. I gave the Dodgers little chance to win let alone sweep because of the front-line Cardinals pitching. However, for the second straight year, the Dodgers swept the Central Division Champs and did so by beating Adam Wainwright and Chris Carpenter.
How about the Red Sox getting swept? Who saw that coming? Certainly not me and not even the Beantown Faithful when they watched their team own a 2-run lead with two outs and two strikes in the ninth.
The Phillies proved once again that champions die hard. They were down to their final out and a loss away from flying back to Philadelphia to meet Colorado in a decisive game five, but Mr. Clutch Ryan Howard came through.
It's these kinds of games that make October baseball magical. You've got to hinge on every pitch.
The NLCS opens Thursday and the ALCS opens Friday. Going to be a great week of baseball. Stay tuned.
By the way, the Yankees look awful good and awful tough to beat.
