Let me preface and say I am by no means a volleyball guru, but I have monitored scores all season long from around the area and I am trying to figure out why each and every year teams from our area are quick outs in the tournament.
I just can't figure it out. The teams up in the northwestern part of the Eastern District -- I.E. Dover, New Philadelphia areas -- consistently dominate us in volleyball. We've had some good teams in the past few years, but each and every year they are bounced in the district tournament at best. I can't remember a volleyball team in my 10 years of working at this newspaper making it to the regional in volleyball.
We've had basketball teams advance that far and beyond; we've had girls track teams win state championships and a softball team win a state championship, but in volleyball we've got nothing. I can't figure this out. You'd think in an area this size that the athletes all transfer over in basically all of the sports, but for some reason volleyball is left in the dust when it comes to success.
I may be speaking a bit out of turn, but is it because volleyball lacks importance to the schools, teams and players. It's like it's a pass time from spring sports; through summer basketball to actual basketball season.
I am anxious to hear some thoughts on why this has come to be like it is. It's totally bizarre and baffling to me.
