Between a rock and a hard place
October 27, 2009 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
It was refreshing to see such a large turnout at this week's Buckeye Local Board of Education meeting in Dillonvale. The overflowd crowd was no surprise to me, however. The board's regular monthly meeting came on the heels of the district's announcement to close two schools. Targeted for closure at the end of the school year are Buckeye North Middle School in Brilliant and Buckeye West Elementary in Adena. When the doors on local schools are boarded up for good, it sparks interest and passion not normally seen. Such is the case with impacted families served by schools in the Adena and Brilliant areas. The planned closings have the making of a potentially volatile issue. The district is dealing with an endless amount of red ink while families want schools nearby. The district's deficit can prove paralyzing. I don't relish the hand Superintendent Mark Miller and the Buckeye school board has been dealt. They may need the wisdom of Solomon to solve this dilemma to everyone's liking.
