The high school football playoffs took an ugly turn for local teams this past weekend. Four of our six teams bit the dust. Fortunately, Eastern Ohio has a good chance to see one of its own in the Division VI state semifinals. Bridgeport and Shadyside have positioned themselves nicely in Region 23 after gaining wins in varying fashion Saturday. Bridgeport made the most of its first-ever home playoff game by whacking Tusky Catholic. Shadyside, meanwhile, no stranger to playoff miracles, staged another one in ousting Columbiana in the final seconds. The Bulldogs now take on their ouster from a year ago in Malvern while the Tigers take on upstart Grove City Christian. I can see the Bulldogs and Tigers meeting in the Region 23 finale, guaranteeing the OVAC a state semifinalist.
