My Favorite Christmas Movies

November 19, 2009 - Kim Collette
7 days.....that's all I have left to dust off the cobwebs.  It's that time of year to break out some of my all-time favorite movies....Christmas movies!

So here it goes....my "Top 10" Christmas movies!

10. Elf:  Let me preface this by saying I am NOT a huge Will Ferrell fan.  So, for this  to make my list is astonishing!  Buddy the Elf finds his way to New York City  from the North Pole to search for his "real" dad.  Buddy's "elf" ways help people have faith in Santa Claus and remember the significance  of the holiday.  It's a lot corny, but it will keep you laughing.

9.  Home Alone:  Hysterical!  8 year old Kevin gets accidentally left behind while his family is in France for Christmas.  Kevin has to defend his house from moronic burglars.  Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern (as the burglars) make this movie for me!  Watching them get "punished" over and over again at the end of the movie still cracks me up!

8.  Miracle on 34th Street:
A nice old man claims to be Santa Claus.  Everyone thinks he is insane.  But, a lawyer decides to defend in in a court of law by arguing that he is REALLY Santa Claus.  Definitely a classic that will leave you all warm and gushy inside.   A bonus:  You can watch either the original or the new version and they are both equally good!

7.  It's a Wonderful Life:  George Bailey is shown what life would be like if he never existed.  This is a great movie that makes you think.  It makes you think about what you are doing in your life and how it affects the people around you.  It truly is an uplifting story that will get you in the Christmas spirit.  And everyone knows the quote: "Every time a bell rings an angel gets their wings."

6.  How the Grinch Stole Christmas:  I STILL prefer the cartoon version to Jim Carey's version.  (But I will admit I watch both every year.)  The Grinch of course hatches a plan to wipe out Christmas for the Who's of Whoville.  However, the Grinch learns what truly is important.  The best part for me is Thurl Ravenscroft singing "You're a Mean One, Mr.Grinch."

5.  The Santa Clause:  Scott Calvin falls into the "clause" when the real Santa falls off of his roof.  Scott puts on Santa's red pants and coat and becomes Santa.  It's hysterical to watch Tim Allen in this role.  And, it's a really cool version of the North Pole and Santa's workshop.

4.  A Christmas Story:  Yes, I know that the 24 hours of  A Christmas Story to some is annoying.  But, I love it!  The leg lamp!   "You'll shoot your eye out!"  Triple dog dares!  So many classic moments in this movie!   It is one of my favorites.  And....I make sure to have my t.v. turned on for the marathon~

3. A Christmas Carol:  Every Christmas Eve for as long as I can remember, my brother and I watch A Christmas Carol.  But not just any version....the George C. Scott version.  George C.Scott (who also played Patton) is in the role of Scrooge.   We all know the story....it ranks #3 for me because of our watching tradition.

2.  National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation:  Clark W. Griswald.  My favorite movie in the Lampoon series.  This movie is too funny!  Clark decorating his house, the saucer sled incident, Aunt Bethany....but my favorite part is Clark's "speech" (which for obvious reasons, I can't quote here)!  Play ball!

But.....hands down, without a doubt, my favorite Christmas movie is ....

1. Irving Berlin's White Christmas:  After leaving WWII Bob Wallace and Phil Davis  team up to become a song and dance act.  Davis plays matchmaker and introduces  to beautiful sisters, Betty and Judy.  The four travel to Vermont lodge only to find Wallace and Davis' former commander, General Waverly is the lodge owner and is in some financial trouble.  Helping General Waverly is the backdrop for some great songs and dances.  The only disappoint for me in this wonderful movie is the number "Choreography."  It doesn't seem to fit the story in my eyes.  I watch this movie a lot during the season...it just never gets old to me.  I think I know every word!  Not to mention....Bing Crosby singing White Christmas is my favorite part of the whole holiday season!

There you have it.  My favorites.  My honorable mention list would include:  Polar Express, Jingle All the Way, Christmas with the Kranks, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer and Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus.  Hopefully this list passes the approval of Meghan, Ron and all of you.

Get out there! You have about a month to get all your Christmas movie watching in!  Tis the Season!

Until next time friends!
