Hoops Under way
December 1, 2009 - Seth Staskey
The high school basketball season is under way for girls and boys tips it off Friday around the Buckeye State.
Something tells me this is going to be an average at best season. Basketball is one of my favorite sports of the school year. I like having a game to go almost every night of the week, but the quality of play leaves a little to be desired.
It's not really anyone's fault, but the players in this area just don't invest the amount of time into basketball that the sport requires. It's like the definition of a pass-time. Obviously, this is a football valley first and foremost. And our football teams do quite well when they hit the playoff circuit, but in basketball our teams put forth good records because they beat other teams which leave something to be desired and when they get into the tournament they are sent packing sometimes before the calendar flips to March.
It's unfortunate. It's not all of the athletes either. The fans aren't as into anything as much as they are into football. Look at the football event held at Wheeling Island Stadium, that thing is jammed with people from all over the area, but the Cancer Research Classic, which brings top-notch hoop talent to the Ohio Valley is doing everything it can to get people in the stands and it's unfortunate. To me, it's a lot easier to see good basketball talent than it is football talent.
I guess somethings aren't going to change because people like what they like. It's just unfortunate that basketball can't get the support that football does.
