50 Year Reunion
February 2, 2010 - Seth Staskey
I had the opportunity to attend the 50th anniversary of the Ohio State Buckeyes' 1960 NCAA Basketball Championship last Sunday during the Buckeyes' game against Minnesota.
I must say, I've covered a lot of wonderful events during my 11-plus years at The Times Leader from preps to major college to professional, but this reunion definitely ranks near the top of the list.
Obviously, I never had the opportunity to see the team play, but I've heard people tell tale of how basically a group of sophomores led by Bridgeport's own John Havlicek, Jerry Lucas, Bobby Knight and Larry Sigfried led OSU to its first and only title in men's basketball. I've always been interested in that team because A. it's OSU basketball and B. the team featured a player from the local area.
And just being able to be around these guys, who are all intelligent and all are doing quite well health wise for being in their late 60s or early 70s, was an honor. I listened to interviews in depth with Havlicek, Lucas and Knight. They talked about everything from winning the title in 1960, to telling stories about moments with their teammates off the court to the current state of NCAA basketball to LeBron James. You name the topic, these guys were on par.
I asked Bobby Knight about Ohio Valley product Dick Reasbeck and Knight responded, "I roomed with Dick Reasbeck here for two years, and that's all I am going to say about that." with a smurk on his face. Something tells me he's got several classic stories, but opted not to share.
When I first heard announcement that this team was getting back together, I immediately made plans to attend. Needless to say, it was something I'll never forget and look back on fondly. I was thinking most of the day Sunday, I sure hope I'm doing this well in regards when I am in my late 60s.
