My "B" Teams!
March 17, 2010 - Kim Collette
March Madness is finally here! And....I love it! You might not think March Madness is very "pop culture," but look around...it's everywhere. I bet you could go into any business, school or home and someone would be talking about brackets. Hop onto the internet and you can find a tournament challenge on pretty much every website you visit. So....March Madness to me is pop culture.
So, every year I dive right into this pop cultural phenomenon. Which 65 teams will make the tourney field? I watch the selection show hoping my favorites get in AND get a great seed. Once the brackets are revealed, I can't wait to get my hands on one! Who will the Cinderella team be? Who from the major colleges will get beat that is a shocker? Will a #16 seed finally beat a #1 seed? It gets my heart pumping just thinking about it! And.....the "madnes" begins tomorrow afternoon!
Each year I need to fill out 2 brackets for any challenge that I decide to enter. (And just a side note, I never win any of them.) I'm sorta like Mike Golic on Mike & Mike in the Morning. I have a sheet of "integrity" (which I try to pick winners with my astute college basketball knowledge) and a sheet of the "heart" (in which I pick teams that I like and want to win).
My sheet of integrity this year isn't filled with a lot of upsets. I mostly have the higher seeds advancing. In fact, I have no lower than a #2 seed in the Final Four. And....I have the #1 overall (Kansas) beating the #3 overall (Duke) in the National Championship. However, on the flip side, my sheet of the heart is littered with upsets. The biggest one would be Ohio University ( my alma mater) beating Georgetown and Tennessee to face The Ohio State University in the Sweet Sixteen. That would be considered dream game 1 for me. (In fact if that actually happened my legiance would be tested. I love my alma mater, but I have always been a Buckeye-Girl.) Dream game 2 on my sheet of the heart is Ohio State facing off against West Virginia in the National Championship game. Could that matchup be any more fun? Two rival states (who in my opinion can't stand each other) duking it out to say "We're #1!" The only better ending in my eyes would be the Duke Blue Devils winning the whole kit and kaboodle.
It's a great time of the year for college basketball fans! I know I will be tuning in....and rooting like crazy for my "B" teams! Let's Go Bobcats! Let's Go Buckeyes! Let's Go Blue Devils!
Until next time friends!
Keeping with the basketball theme, I would like to wish the Shadyside basketball team, coaches, fans, and community good luck this Friday in the Regional Finals! Go Tigers!
