Icy departure

April 5, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral

The Wheeling/Johnstown Nailers. I don't like the sound of it. But after a weekend decision by the Brooks Brothers, that is what the Ohio Valley is getting next year in its professional hockey team. No person can serve two masters nor can a pro hockey team have two hometowns. The Brooks Brothers, club owners, plan on shipping 10 homes games to Johnstown, while keeping 26 in The Friendly City. They hope to boost attendance in Wheeling as the brothers say it is too tough to market 36 home games in Wheeling. I say 36 or 26, if you put a good product on the ice they will come. I see this move to Johnstown as the forerunner of an eventual and permanent Nailers' exodus from Wheeling. Things have never been right since the Thunderbirds morphed into the Nailers.
