Leading The Way

May 24, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral

The Martins Ferry School District's decision to implement drug testing for the 2010-2011 year has, as I expected, other local school districts thinking about following suit.
The Barnesville School District has launched discussions to implement a similar drug-testing program for student-athletes. I am told that other local districts have informally talked about doing the same.
Martins Ferry's testing program is one that seeks to help avert problems, not looking to be punitive in nature. It is designed to help student-athletes avoid the major pratfalls often presented by peer pressure.
The new Purple Riders' drug-testing program will likely encounter some minor glitches early on, but that is expected with something of this magnitude. In the long run, however, it is a program that will be the blueprint for similar ones across the Eastern Ohio landscape.
Martins Ferry schools have taken the lead in many academic and athletic endeavors. Student-athlete drug-testing may be the district's most rewarding one.
