Buds challenge or simply: We want cool nicknames, too!
May 25, 2010 - Taste Buds
THIS THURSDAY marks the beginning of a new chapter for the Buds.
Yes, the Buds are finally going to do it. They’re stepping into a new realm of taking on food challenges the likes which they have never seen before.
The Buds are putting themselves out there, ready to take on challenges and food-eating contests of all types - that is as long as SOMEONE actually challenges them to eat SOMETHING!
Competitive eating goes back at least as far as the buffet, and probably started with the cave dwellers’ first kill. From old-time pie-eating to today’s July 4th hot dog race at Coney Island, the likes of Joey Chestnut (66 franks and buns in 12 minutes), Takeru Kobayashi (20 pounds of rice balls in 30 minutes), and Sonya Thomas (11 pounds of cheesecake in 9 minutes) have become world famous.
The Buds aren’t quite ready to become competitive eaters but they do want to get cool nicknames like the other greats in the sport.
After doing a little research, the Buds found some of the best names are already taken but in the big scheme of things it probably doesn’t matter because the Buds couldn’t keep up with them at the dinner table. For example:
Crazy Legs Conti once ate 5 1/2 pounds of buffet food in 12 minutes.
Joey “Jaws” Chestnut ate 380 shrimp wontons at CP Biggest Eater Competition in 8 minutes a mere three weeks ago on May 9.
Takeru “Tsunami” Kobayashi won the Nathan’s Hotdog competition six years in a row until 2007. He once ate 17.7 pounds of cows brains in 15 minutes.
Tim Janus is known to the competitive eating community as “Eater X.” On May 8 of this year, he ate 7.72 pounds of boneless chicken wings at the Isle Boonville World Boneless Buffalo Wing Eating Championship in a mere 12 minutes.
Erik “the Red” Denmark at 9.75 Native American fry breads in 8 minutes.
Known as “The People’s Champ,” Eric “Badlands” Booker ate 49 glazed doughnuts in 8 minutes.
Micah “Wing Kong” Collins are 84 ounces of baked beans in58 seconds.
“Buffalo” Jim Reeves ate 13.22 pounds of watermelon at the Brookville Community Picnic in 15 minutes.
Yellowcake Subich began his eating career on a bet with a co-worker and has competed in Nathan’s hot dogs, baked beans, watermelon, shanghai noodles, apple dumplings and hot wings. He is known for his love of cornbread and love of nation. But, we still aren’t sure what his real name is!
Jammin’ Joe LaRue ate 46 ears sweet corn at the Sweet Corn Fiesta in 12 minutes last month.
“The Gorgin’ Goblin,” Nick Bauer made waves in April on the Major League Eating circuit by finishing in second place at the World Crawfish Eating Championship.
See? What do all these people have in common? Kickin’ nicknames and stomachs made of iron, that's what!
The Buds are fairly certain their stomachs are made of something akin to Silly Putty so their only hope is a cool nickname!
