It's hard to believe that summer has arrived. Well, not officially, but in terms of prep sports and school.
Schools are basically all done for the year and prep sports wrapped up last weekend in Ohio with the state champions in baseball, softball and track crowned. It was a memorable year once again to say the least.
We had teams reach the tournament for the first time in their respective sports like Harrison Central in football; a girls cross country team from St. Clairsville turn the sport upside down for the year before settling for state runnerup; a team come up one game shy of reaching the state boys basketball tournament in Shadyside and then we had several individuals earn all-Ohio acclaim in all kinds of sports, including football, basketball, wrestling, track, baseball. It was a pretty solid year.
It seems like each year, I sit and look at the returnees for respective sports and think, 'oh boy, this is going to be just a bad year,' but in the end the kids rise to the occassion and far exceed the expections laid upon them. I think much of that has to do with the fact that they've sat in others' shadows and waited their turn. Once the opportunity arises, they make the most of it. That's a sign of character and determination.
As always, it was a blast bringing the exploits our local prep athletes to you each and every day for nearly eight months. We're working dilligently to prepare for next year, but I must even admit, an upcoming vacation will be a welcome sight. However, once I return, I expect to re-charged and ready to go.
Football is just a few months away.
