One Too Many
July 14, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
We have been down this road before -- an election ballot that features two Bellaire levies on it.
The police department and the school district each had levies on the May primary ballot, and both suffered defeat. Now both issues will return to the November general election ballot.
I see that as trouble, as Bellaire residents are looking at an extra 18 mills if both should pass, the school levy itself asking for 12.9 mills. That is a major financial concern to taxpayers.
Consequently, Bellaire voters become gun shy, making it tough sledding for both issues.
Either levy would be better served with holding a special election and standing on its own merit.
The possibility of paying an extra 18 mills is difficult for any homeowner to digest, especially in Bellaire. I understand the need for each levy, as police protection and quality schools are the hallmarks of any community.
The dye is cast for the November ballot with both levies again seeking voter support. I vote for one levy at a time.
