Moving!

July 16, 2010 - Kim Collette

Have you ever seen the movie "Moving?"  Well, if you haven't, here's a quick summary for you.  The movie's tagline is: "One family's experience with the "M" word."  Richard Pryor plays Arlo Pear.  Arlo unfortunately gets fired and has to find a new job.  Arlo is successful in finding a new job....but it means his family must relocate.  And....relocate across the country to Boise, Idaho.  Now....imagine all of the worst possible things that could happen.  All of those bad things actually happen to Arlo and his family.  From hiring the wrong moving company (who doesn't show up with their belongings) to the house they bought not being what they expected (basically it ends up being a gutted house), this is the worst move ever.  "Moving" is a hilarious look at the actual moving process from start to finish.  But....a hilarious no one wants to happen to them.

So, every time I move, that 1988 movie pops into my head.  Knock on wood...in all of my moves  I've NEVER encountered anything quite like the movie.  Over the course of my 32 years, I've moved 9 different times.  And, each time I breathe a sigh of relief that the move goes off without a hitch.

The most recent move being this past weekend.  The only "problem" I encountered was the weather.  Of course it decided to rain.  Rain and moving equals NO FUN!  But, other than that, there were no problems.  Everything was "found" and unpacked.  All of my personal belongings found new homes.  Books were put on shelves.  Movies are alphabetically organized (yes I am that organized).  Knick-knacks are out and pictures are hung.  Even my hundreds of clothes and shoes are neatly tucked away.  Thank goodness the move is over!  And, thank goodness I didn't become the next Arlo Pear.  Move number 10 is in the books and without a hitch!

So if you ever have to move again, watch the movie "Moving."  I am sure it will make you feel good about whatever obstacles you run into during your own move.

Until next time friends!
