Quieting Ohio

July 26, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral

Tom Bruney and his West Virginia All-Stars made life much easier for OVAC officials Sunday night, disposing of their Ohio counterparts in The Rudy Mumley Charity Football Classic, 24-14.
The Mountaineers' convincing triumph will now quiet those clamoring for a restructuring of the game from its bordering states rivalry. The Buckeyes' past dominance had many prep grid fans seeking a North-South format. Such a move would result in a loss of much of the pre-game hype and excitement.
Now such talk can be put on the back burner, or at least until Ohio wins three or four consecutive games. Such an occurrence may never materialize as new schools joining the OVAC on the West Virginia side will balance the talent playing field.
Newcomer Parkersburg South impacted Sunday's outcome while Morgantown and University will likely do more of the same starting with the 2011 all-star game.
Although Ohio diehards may see Sunday's outcome a bitter pill to swallow, in the long run it is the best medicine the game could have received.
