Ready for football
August 25, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
Well, IT is here. IT is the arrival of high school football in the Ohio Valley.
There are two seasons in the valley -- football season and looking forward to football season. Wait no more.
Four local games unfold Thursday -- two on Wheeling Island and two at Steubenville's Harding Stadium. I love the Thursday start to the football campaign as it serves up an extra night of grid offerings, one day early. Each venue has a game of wide-ranging local interest.
Bellaire and Wheeling Central lock horns in a 5:30 p.m. Island start, in a game which the Big Reds may make more interesting than they are being given credit. The Reds have scrimmaged well in the preseason and may raise an eyebrow in the opener.
Bridgeport, meanwhile, embarks on what it hopes will be a most special season when the Bulldogs take on Steubenville Central in the Harding nightcap. The Dogs are loaded for bear and -- with good health -- can make a deep playoff run.
Thursday's quartet of prep games sets the tables for the quickest 10 weeks of the year. Football season literally flies by, so relish each week, whether your favorite team is enjoying a banner campaign or at the door-mat end of the spectrum.
Football has been appropriately dubbed king in the Ohio Valley. It is an accurate moniker.
