One Less Option
September 8, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
History was made Saturday in Bellaire. Never before had the Big Reds and Fighting Irish each posted wins in the All-American Town on the same afternoon. Moreover, they had never played on the same afternoon in Bellaire prior to Saturday.
Such made for a day of celebration in Bellaire, fueled even more by the fact St. John's was unveiling its new stadium. The two teams again play at home this Saturday, both facing tough assignments. The Reds host Buckeye Local, the Green welcoming Newcomerstown.
The village comes alive when it hosts a Saturday afternoon football game. I would like to see starting in 2011 the two schools do something with joint scheduling, where only one game a Saturday is on Bellaire soil.
That way football diehards could possibly be treated to games in Bellaire nearly every week. Merchants would also experience a windfall.
With neither stadium boasting lights, a meeting of the minds prior to scheduling would help reduce the number of twin billings on a given Saturday.
I relish Saturday afternoon football in Bellaire, as do countless grid fans. I would prefer not having a choice. One game every Saturday in the All-American Town would suffice.
