Don Feenerty is a man with vision. The Pease Township Park District director has come up with a novel idea -- one that will showcase Martins Ferry's churches, the city itself and bring some money into the community. The Historic Tour of Churches is planned for Saturday, Oct. 16 in Ohio's oldest settlement. It is an idea I think is novel and brilliant. Martins Ferry has many gorgeous and tradition-filled churches. Eight of those structures will be featured on the tour that will bring many spectators through the heart of the business district. The tour, in addition to shining the spotlight on the churches, will also dovetail into a festival setting, as crafters and possibly other vendors will be displaying and selling goods. Taking it a step further, such a tour is being discussed for a holiday return. The festive backdrop will surely attract even more pedestrian traffic. Once again business coffers will gain a boost. I expect the Oct. 16 tour to be a smashing success. It is sweet that the churches are all basically on a continuous down the street walk. The only possible hindrance may be a heavy dousing from Mother Nature. Other communities may eventually pick up on a similar idea. Bellaire, for one, also lends itself to such an event, as it has many distinct churches all in the same proximity.
