Campers on the Move
November 22, 2010 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
OVAC officials have made a good move in relocating the Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Camp out of West Liberty. The Hilltoppers' bill was too pricey for a one week's stay. It became a budgetary strain on the OVAC and threatened the game's well-being. The move will be nearly seamless. Camp will now be set up shop just 4 miles up Route 88 at Bethany College. The Bison facilities are new and first class. There will be no dropoff in accommodations and travel time is a mere 5-10 minutes longer for most, shorter for those Wellsburg and north. The relocation to the Brooke County institution is one that obviously brings with it a major cost savings for the conference. Thus, the Mumley Football Classic and all its spinoff activities will not be jeopardized, keeping the game as the social event of the summer. In the process, Bethany College will be able to use the grid camp as a built-in recruiting tool. The highly regarded academic institution will be showcasing its bucolic campus to more than 60 families each July with a chance to impress enough to land several more potential students. The OVAC-Bethany College five-year marriage will be a blissful partnership.
