Martins Ferry officials deserve major kudos for their budget-preserving efforts they exhibited this year. The Purple City was destined for an economic nightmare early in 2010. But thanks to creativity and vision, the city administration turned a bad situation into a remarkable success story. Rather than laying off city workers and/or cutting services, the city will now enter the new year with a carryover balance of up to $140,000. Having that much money remaining in the coffers is remarkable after the gloom and doom scenarios being painted early in the year. Many Eastern Ohio communities face a similar situation to what Ferry was dealing with. It might be wise for officials from financially troubled towns to pick the brains of the Ferry administration. It may pay big dividends. It really is a Merry Christmas for the city of Martins Ferry.
