Big Ten Bowl Blues
January 3, 2011 - Robert "Bubba" Kapral
THE OHIO State Buckeyes now carry the bowl banner for the Big Ten. The conference sports a black eye following a New year's Day beat down. Five Big Ten members took to the gridiron Saturday, and five come away losers. Michigan State and Michigan suffered lopsided losses to Alabama and Mississippi State, respectively. The Wolves' shellacking may cost Rich Rodriguez his job. Penn State fell to Florida and Northwestern dropped a decision to Texas Tech. The showcase of the day was Wisconsin's Rose Bowl matchup with unbeaten TCU. The Horned Frogs held on for a 21-19 decision against the highly rated Badgers. If not for an Illinois triumph over Baylor and an Iowa nod over Mizzou, it would be a total Big Ten washout heading into Tuesday night's Sugar Bowl. The Big East was the laughing stock of college football heading into bowl season, but it has acquitted itself reasonably well. Now the Buckeyes -- with many issues to deal with -- are the Big Ten's final hope to recoup some lost swagger. The Razorbacks featuring star QB Ryan Mallett will be no easy touch. Moreover, Jim Tressel has a penchant for losing to SEC schools during bowl season. I believe that often times controversy brings a team together. With that said, I feel tattoogate will spark a Buckeyes' bowl victory.
