The Lost Dogs

March 4, 2011 - Kim Collette
I am a firm believer that everyone deserves a second chance. However, after reading Jim Gorant's "The Lost Dogs", I do not believe that Michael Vick does. And, I firmly believe that any person who is an animal lover, whether it be dogs, cats, rabbits, horses or fish, would second my opinion.

The way Michael Vick and the Bad Newz Kennels treated these animals was horrific. Parts of this book made me look at my own dog, my black lab Ryder, and cry. I can't imagine how any person could treat dogs the way Vick did. 51 dogs. 51 innocent dogs that this crew decided to "train" to be vicious attack dogs. 51 dogs who barely ate or got water. 51 dogs that were locked up in the Georgia heat with no way to cool themselves off. 51 dogs who probably only wanted to be paid attention to and loved.

After reading this book, I realized I didn't know the whole story. A lot of the sports media and new outlets left some information out. For instance, one local judge didn't want to issue a warrant "because Vick was from a low income situation that became a star. He was a role model for other youths." Really??? He fought dogs. Vick was also arrested numerous times while on probabtion for his role in the dog fighting scandal. He was arrested for drugs and concealing drugs. Really??? Let's give him a second chance....Why? He was a multi-millionaire, living the good life. Why go down that path?

I guess this all boils down to this. I am an animal lover! I am a dog lover! After reading this book....I feel more than ever....Michael Vick is LUCKY to have gotten a second chance. I wouldn't have given him one!
