Spring Sports?

March 31, 2011 - Michael Palmer
It's freezing out there! Spring sports fans are well aware of this weather alert.

Saturday the fans and track athletes were greeted by temps in the 20s and a brisk north wind that made watching the event painful, but not as painful as trying to run in a pair of shorts and tank top.

They are conditioned to the cold, after all these athletes have been out practicing in the cold for weeks, I doubt they were in their uniforms and five of the local schools do so without a track of their own.

Opening Day for the ball teams was Monday and once again the softballl and baseball players were trying to keep their fingers warm as their seasons got underway. If you have ever played these sports, you can recall trying to throw a ball or pitch with numb fingers. Catching a ball with cold hands is also not a treat, as one parent along the sidelines found out when they caught a foul ball with their bare hands. OUCH!

Cold weather makes the spring sports a challenge and then there are the four letter words that make us all cringe: RAIN and SNOW!

A little of both fell Wednesday afternoon causing the first of many games to be postponed by weather. The forecast shows little mercy for the athletes, with more flurries and then rain and thunder in the five day forecast.

The greening grass of the local diamonds is covered with a 'cosmetic' coating of snow. It may be the latter part of next week before we return to the sound of the aluminum bats striking the sphere.

One fan suggested swapping spring and fall sports. I can say without any hesitation, "That will never happen." Besides, the late season temps would not be much better.

I still stand steadfast in my resolution not to wear gloves to shoot the spring sports. I am going to get a new baseball cap payday. Somehow, I have misplaced some of the hair I had last season.

If the waether breaks, I hope to see more fans come out and enjoy some spring sports. It really can be a fun outing. The main differences between profesional baseball and high school; the tickets and hot dogs are cheaper, the seats are better but you can not keep a foul ball you catch.

If your hands are cold, I would not suggest trying to catch the darn thing any way.
