Hold off Valentine's DayWed, January 7, 2009 @ 1:27PM Walking down to a local eatery this morning one of my cohorts noticed a Valentine's Day display in a window of a retail store. Splashed with pink hearts and chocolates, it disgusts me to see retailers already chomping away at Valentine's Day decorations. Christmas wasn't even two weeks ago. I know with recent price hikes and a slumming economy I am feeling the pinch in the pocket book after Christmas. I imagine many others are feeling that same pinch. Do stores ever realize it's time to take a break and allow your patrons time to breath? It always seems when one holiday ends another bites you on the butt. Not just Christmas to Valentine's Day to Easter, but Halloween to Thanksgiving too. I wish we could have a larger time lapse between holidays. It would be nice if we didn't see cupid until the end of January or early February.

Buckeye BluesTue, January 6, 2009 @ 1:28PM There are no moral victories in athletics. Ohio State played well against Texas Monday night in the Fiesta Bowl, but did not get the job done. After back-to-back blowout losses in the last two BCS title games, it was refreshing to see the Buckeyes perform at a high level. But a great OSU comeback was foiled by a last-minute drive by the Longhorns, a march conducted minus timeouts by the eventual winners. Thus, another bitter bowl pill to swallow for the Buckeye faithful. The 2008 season harbored great optimism for the Buckeyes. Three losses, however, paint a much different picture.

I don't wanna hear it...Wed, January 7, 2009 @ 3:25PM I've gotten every single one of these lines over the last five months from friends, family and co-workers. And to be honest with you, I'm really, really tired of hearing them. Here's why: "There are plenty of fish in the sea..." Yea, thanks for that piece of advice EVERYONE, but unless you want a psycho fish, a loser fish, a stupid fish, a cheatin' fish or a crazy fish, you're OUTA LUCK, so do me a favor, and stop preaching this to me because let's get real -- there aren't! "You'll just know..." OK, if you say so. I wish someone would explain that. Does something strike you in the head if he's the right one for you? Will it be like an electric shock? Stop telling me this if you can't back up your theory, because, quite frankly, I'm sick and tired of hearing that crap.

A Passion for the JobWed, January 7, 2009 @ 3:34PM We were discussing this morning work ethic. My wife is an assistant manager at Wal Mart and has missed just seven days off sick in fifteen years, that was due to walking pneumonia. I myself have been here at the Times Leader for one year and thankfully I have not had any sick days. Maybe we are a tougher breed, or maybe we are just too stupid to stay home. Recently, Kay Sedgmer was off sick and I was worried, she is of the tough bunch, the rather go to work sick than just lay in bed kind of Gal Friday. I saw her in Cadiz today going to yet another commissioner's meeting, a boring task for some news reporters, but not for this one. She has a passion for her job, she goes to each meeting, not as a mundane weekly assignment, but as a watchdog for the residents of the county.

Back in the Ohio ValleyWed, January 7, 2009 @ 9:45AM After nearly a week in the Arizona desert of wearing shorts and enjoying temperatures hovering near 70 degrees, I am back in Martins Ferry looking out my window with temperatures in the upper 30s and snow on the way. Welcome back Seth I guess you could say. Anyway, other than the weather, it's nice to be back. I covered a boys basketball game last night (Bellaire vs. St. Clairsville), which allowed me to get back into the flow of things quickly. No complaints about the trip. The treatment the media receives from the Fiesta Bowl was unreal, the game was great other than the fact that OSU lost. I would have to say that if you are looking for a spot to vacation check out the Phoenix Metro area. You won't be disappointed and it's easy to navigate as well.
