Malvern ends Bridgeport's run
STEUBENVILLE — For the second consecutive year, Malvern has ended Bridgeport’s magical season. Saturday night here, the top-seeded Hornets (11-1) advanced to the Division VI, Region 23 championship game with a deceiving, 31-9, victory over the No. 4 seed Bulldogs (10-2) before a nice-sized crowd on Reno Field inside Harding Stadium. “We had our chances,” a disappointed Bridgeport head coach Rudy Vavrock said. “The kids battled the entire night. I don’t know what to say.” Bridgeport lost standout tailback Chris Smelley on its second offensive play of night when he sustained a game-ending left ankle injury after picking up 7 yards. Smelley, who ran for more than 1,400 yards, watched the second half from the sidelines on crutches. “I don’t know what happened,” he said following the game.

THREE-AND-DONE!
On a cold, clear night in Yorkville, two high-powered teams led by two highly-successful coaches were shooting for just one berth in the Division III, Region 11 semi-finals. The one drawback to sports, someone has to lose.

DOVER — The tone was set early here Friday night.
On the first play from scrimmage, Harrison Central handed the ball to all-state caliber running Ben Palmer, who’d ran for 1400 yards coming into the contest.
