I wonder if this "fix" was offered in years past and was rejected for budget reasons.

how about a huge sign facing north and a huge sign facing south with a big FLASHING red light about 100 yards away from the intersection each direction saying CAUTION DANGEROUS INTERSECTION AHEAD.
