April 30, 2013

Dear Editor I would like to express my support for the Bellaire School Levy. As a parent, I would like the best for my child and other children in the area....

Since its a tax on property owners ONLY, then it is ONLY property owners who should be voting on it....not public housing "tenants" and people who clearly do not understand what the two letter word NO means.

Does Belmont County need 7 different school districts, boards and Superintendents? No. Will districts always need more money? Yes. Ask your state reps why nothing has changed with school funding since it was declared unconstitutional many years ago. Hold their feet to the fire. Fix the funding, fix the problem. Be aware however, that one possible outcome is having taxes added to your bill without your say so. Pennsylvania does it that way but there has to be a proven need (increased enrollment, etc) to build new schools and raise taxes. Ohio's problem isn't only funding, its the giant cost of mandates and the burden of legacy costs.

Funny thing.....REMEMBER all of the fighting and arguments in the early 70's about whether Ohio should have a State lottery???....religious and anti-gambling groups were against it. It passed largely on the pledge that it would supply enough money to Ohio schools so that property owners would never have to pay more taxes....yet the infamous "school levy" lives on and on.

People need to remind others to get out and VOTE NO! I agree this is a sneaky attempt to pass the levy. But, they have been underhanded in other situations that this should not surprise anyone. This school district is comprised of welfare recipients, retirees, and under-employed hard working people. We simply cannot afford to keep bailing everyone out.

Probably thought they would sneak it through this time because there is nothing else on the ballot and so people won't go out an vote...they are hoping only those in favor will vote. The bottom line is this...people simply don't have the money for any more taxes...sorry, Bellaire schools. Perhaps only people who own property should vote on this issue and not those in gov't housing who will not pay one penny towards this...I think that is the real rub for most people. Are they going to bus them to the polls? And just how much did they pay for this "special election" to be on the ballot????? And...what part of NO don't you understand???

There should be a law against this ongoing harassment. This is nonsensical that we repetitively vote on a levy that we rejected 5 times previously. VOTE NO!
