October 11, 2013

ST. CLAIRSVILLE -- The Belmont County Board of Elections held an emergency meeting Wednesday afternoon at board headquarters to deal with a sizable dilemma....

The article didn't give a reason why the Martins Ferry Board of Education turned down the request to use the facilities for the election other than it "opted" not to. Was it a logistics reason? Security issues? Something else perhaps? They could have checked with the Bridgeport Board for policies and procedures as Bridgeport area elections have been held at the school gym for several years now with very little hassles that I have observed. Plus I believe students of the high school government class participate and help with the people coming in to vote by directing them to the correct precinct area, and other functions so it serves as a learning experience for them too. On a side note: I would think the people of Martins Ferry might be a bit upset they can't use the public school building as they themselves are helping to pay for it through their own tax dollars.

I'm not from Ferry, but, I wouldn't be voting if I were. I don't have transportation. What about those like me who would have no way to go? This is disgraceful!

What about the swimming pool? There is a large room there and parking.

I received my change notice for polling on Saturday. That was quick work from Wednesday. Something must have been afoot prior.

Why was it an emergency meeting? What happened to the 10-year contract with Liberty Auto - do the taxpayers still have to pay that?

I am disgusted with the Board of elections, and the Board of education. I promote voting them all out of office when their elections come up.

I live in the center of town, I don't go to Colerain, ever. How are the elderly and people without cars going to get to the polling place?

I agree with a previous commenter -Why can't we use the pool/gym building on the first floor? What is the reason the public school would not allow its tax paying citizens use it's building?

This is another attempt to discourage voters in one of the largest cities in Belmont County.

Write the Board of Elections and Board of Education with your comments.

I'm not sure what could possibly be wrong with either the Rec Center of Fire Stations, but either is a much better alternative than Colerain. Seems like its time to get some common sense state regulations rather than disenfranchising half of the city. God forbid that it snows!
