Dear Judy,

I have visite the shelter a few times and when I first pulled up I was sickened to what was in front of me. I felt like I just pulled up to the worst hoarding situation ever to be uncovered. Upon walking through I saw dogs with sores and flies feeding off the sores. The dogs were muddy and smelled horriable. I can not believe that dogs are being taken from some situations and put into an equal or worse situation. Here is the case and point. Verna refuses to work with rescues and the adoption process is so ungodly slow. A place with over 100+ animals should be doing absolutely everything to get those animals in and out. That doesn't mean to just hand them over to anyone. Sometimes you have to give these dogs a chance and just because they have a good vet record does not mean they don't abuse or neglect animals. I saw dogs with worms. So until they get an adopter they are going to be forced to have worms eating away at their insides. There has got to be a better way!

Perhaps if you adopted more animals out instead of hoarding them, it could help alleviate some of your woes? I know of 3 different individuals who have been you the shelter and were not even acknowledged by the staff until they forcibly made their presence known - and then they were told to fill out applications and were never called back. I have been told by numerous other people that they cannot get the staff's attention as well.

I normally do not respond either but I will this time. First of all, what about Lori and Bear??? They had very good rescues who wanted to pull them!! They were euthanized!!!It was also stated that you wanted people in our area to be able to adopt the pugs. Mighigan and Pennsylvania, is that "our" area? I have volunteered for various causes, I have also held an office for a USWA local union, they are thankless jobs at times while rewarding at other times. I respect people who try to help and I respect the fact that you drive 5 days a week with no gas money and no pay, anybody can go..but do you do anything or help while you are there? From what I have seen it appears the shelter needs more than a bunch of "Yes" people!! You are losing employees, you are losing people who donate their time and money but above all animals are losing their precious lives!!That is why people are tired of a one person rules mentality. Maybe it`s time for a look into how and why decisio

Shelters that are run well by well trained staff battle these same issues but handle them successfully. It's great that you have passion but running a shelter well requires more than having a good heart. Maybe you should reach out to the broader animal welfare community and find a mentor shelter that is run well and set a goal for making Belmont County an example of a well run shelter. There are a lot of things you can do to improve your shelter that cost little or no money. Having heart is not enough you need skills and experience. There is no reason that your shelter can't be different.

a 40 yr volunteer and this is the best Judy can come up with? BCARL allows dogs to wallow in mud, heat, ice, snow, and rain tied to nasty looking dog boxes while standing in their own feces waiting for someone to scoop around them. Adoptions take so long people end up giving up, rescues are chased away and told by this shelter's nasty supervisor that BCARL is also a rescue. This is doing right by the animals? Get your head out of your butt, Judy. She claimed BCARL is a county shelter. The supervisor says it's a rescue. Which is it? What about the dogs left outside at night tied to dog boxes because there's no room inside. Working with real rescues might help that. Yes, the STAFF loves the animals and does what they can. It's the supervisor and the BCARL president that need a reality check and a lesson in 21st century animal rescue. BTW, I am a multi time adopter from this shelter so I'm not writing this because I was denied anything. I'm writing this because I care.

PATHETIC - Let's start with Blue Colar Guy - PATHETIC and STUPID. Anybody that has the least little knowledge of Animal Shelters or has been to more that one would understand what a wonderful place the Belmont County Animal Shelter truely is. This shelter keeps the maximum amount of animals it posibly can and gives the dogs there a wonderful - temporary - life in the hopes of a forever home. These dogs get to go outside everyday, 7 days per week, 365 days per year. Ane then they get to go inside every evening to a warm, dry - CLEAN kennel. BlueCollarGuy is probably not bright enough to realize dogs poop. Also not bright enough to know that just becasue you call youself a rescue makes it so. Some of the most horrific abuse and neglect cases happen in these so called rescues. A point of education for the wise one. The Belmont County Shelter is a COunty Shelter contracted with the BCARL to run it. So it's a County Shelter run by the Belmont County Animal Rescue League. SO it's both -

Do I need to get the crayons out or does the Blue Boy understand. If he truely cared and hand an once of brain he would understand that his comments does nothing to help the animals. PATHETIC.

Concernd4 - PATHETIC, not quite as pathetic but still pathetic. It's easy to sit behind your computer and have the high expectations and think that the world is just a perfect liitel place and just hope it will be better and by god it wil be. How abolut getting off the computer and going to the shelter a make it better. I have been to dozens of Shelters in many states and several countries and I can tell you that the Belmont COunty Animal Shelter is run with ONE think in mind - "What's best for the animals" . Run Better??? Give me a break. WHat does that mean. It is not a statement from a person that cares about animals. PATHETIC

Badolpuddy - Second most PATHETIC so far. Millions of dogs are euthanized every year in this coutry because of irresponsibly people.

BCARL and the Belmont COunty Animal SHelter Staff do or in a week to save animals than all of you PATHETIC people will do in your entire lifes. You are PATHETIC. ANd that staff has to hold the animals that they love when they are euthanized. SHAME on the whole PATHETIC bunch of you for talking about dogs that have been euthanized. Guess what bright ones. More are going to be euthanized soon. Why don't you do something productive and try to help those instead of hurting peoples feelings because they are put in horrible situations and have to euthanize becasue of other PATHETIC people.

Anoldfriend. PATHETIC - and not a friend. Yes just adopt them out. Send them to rescues, give them to any old buddy. The fact is that the staff cars about the animals at the shelter and tries to give them the best home possible. Adopting an animal to a irresponsible person is not an acceptable practice. Here's what you PATHETIC people do nto understand. BCARL adopts family members - NOT DOGS AND CATS -

Perhaps if the PATHETIC lot of you understand this it will be easier to understand.

Voice4Voiceless - AHH THE MOST PATHETIC OF THEM ALL. IT's an animal shelter Ms. PATHETIC. Dogs come in in a variety of different conditions. All animals are under ventinary care and tens of thousands of dollars are spent on vet care each year. You are too pathetic to even begin to expalin so I give up. But congradualations you are definately the most PATHETIC

I guess since I am the most pathetic I hit the nerve the hardest! I have been to countless shelters all over the county and this is the absolute WORST!! It is pretty bad when other shelter staff and directors around the area agree. This isn't a shelter this is a PATHETIC hoarding situation. These animals are taken out of situations just as bad if not worse. If you were a TRUE friend to the animals you would want better for them. When they have rescues ready and willing to take them, but death to Verna is a better option..sweetheart that is PATHETIC!! Maybe you need to climb out of the mud and go visit some other shelters you will find NONE of them are even close to being this horrendous. Allowing animals to be worm invested, flea infested and sores all over their body is NEGLECT!!! Thanks again for nominating me as Most Pathetic..your shelter one that award as well!

Another thing ATrueFriend(LOL that's funny)

You said your own words "Some of the most horrific abuse and neglect cases happen in these so called rescues. A point of education for the wise one. The Belmont County Shelter is a COunty Shelter contracted with the BCARL to run it. So it's a County Shelter run by the Belmont County Animal Rescue League. SO it's both"

You got that right your likely standing in that place claiming to be a rescue as I type.

Wow. It's awfully clear that the "pathetic" rantings of ATrueFriendOfTheAnimals is because this immature individual must either work at this shelter or be a personal friend of someone who does. How unprofessional and immature to result to abusive name calling. It takes away from any credibility this individual may have had. The bottom line is that it's clear the people who were deemed pathetic have the best interest of the animals at heart. They seem to be aware it's a shelter where dog poop is plentiful. The issue was worm infested and bloody dog poop, not that there was dog poop. No one condones giving the animals to just any individual or any rescue. No one was bashing staff; they were bashing, and rightly so, the shelter supervisor and her sidekick, the BCARL prez. One lies and the other swears to it. Grow up, ATrueFriend, get your head out of your arse, and take a look at how the animals in this county are being treated. This shelter needs a major overhaul.

Rather be dead! What a statement. Do you really think Lori and Bear would rather be dead?? Probably not, but they are! You definitely seem to know how to use the word pathetic very loosely. But do you know why Lori and Bear were killed when they had rescues willing to pull them? Rescues that are well known and creditable! Thank you for voting me Second most pathetic, I promise next time I will try to do better.

"ATrueFriend" Your comments are PATHETIC! (Way to go tho! Kudos to you for over-using a word!) I have spent countless hours volunteering at the shelter walking the dogs, I have spent large amounts of money on the fundraisers to support them as well as donating food, treats, toys, blankets, bleach, laundry detergent and so much more. The dogs are NOT put in every night. The inside runs are VERY small, a large breed dog couldn't turn around in them if they needed to. Yes, dogs poop. Mine poops. BUT I CLEAN IT UP DAILY. Many of the conditions at the shelter are horrific. If you walked into someone's home and saw that mess, they would lose their animals immediately! Yes, some "rescues" are responsible for abuse and neglect, HOWEVER, credible rescues SHOULD NOT BE TURNED DOWN. Why are so many animals dying there, "friend"? Someone at the "shelter" is on a power trip. They are playing "God" and taking matter into their own hands. Phon

Phone calls and emails need to be returned. Potential adopters need to be treated like they are POTENTIAL ADOPTERS! So many people want to help the animals in our county but are turned away. IN state rescues want to help, but are turned away. But, we keep our animals "local". Shame on you for calling yourself "A True Friend"...in my opinion, you're no "friend" and just as bad as Verna....always judging and insulting those you don't know.

really because i know for a fact that verna adopts dogs out even when they are sick. she is on a power trip and prosecuting even the smallest of infringement without even a second chance, especially when she knows she can make money off the dogs she feels she is saving. mandae and her lie when it conveniences them to make their cases appear more desperate. i know there are people out there who truly deserve to be prosecuted and should be but not every case needs to be taken to the courts and wasting our tax dollars. as for judy you can't even convenience yourself to return phone calls made to your office so remove your blinders honey. verna is on a power trip where she thinks she is judge, jury, and executioner and she has mandae hanging on her coattails. i find it interesting how children can be returned to homes where neglect and even some forms of abuse occur because the parent or parents have been to "PARENTING CLASSES" without ever a note to their permanent record

true friend i don't know where you were "edgumacated" lol but you seriously need to go back and get a real education and maybe in between your uses of pathetic use spell check because your lousy spelling and poor grammar really takes away from your credibility and opinions. i think the staff and volunteers at the shelter/rescue deserve many honors and praise for their tiring work but verna and mandae are two peas in a pod when it comes to how our animals should be cared for and do not show the same sense of well being and care at the animal shelter/rescue. almost every animal i have owned has been an animal someone else couldn't care for anymore or was abandoned or rescued from an abusive home without going to the shelter/rescue for my animals with the exception of one which i adopted after waiting over a month, endured verna's attitude, and proving i could financially support another animal in my home before i was approved by verna. she then sent the dog to my home sick wi

kennel cough warning me that i was contagious and to keep my other animals away until it cleared up. thank god my other animals did not contract this illness and it did finally run its course but she only cares when it suits her. at least when lisa was dog warden she listened to the owners who just made a mistake and took the steps to correct their mistake. verna and mandae just want to make names for themselves. at least i can say my children and my animals have a warm roof over their head and a home with all the love i can give them even if anyone else thinks differently.

I have been involved in animal rescue for a very long time and I can confirm some of the accusations at this facility regarding treatment & attitudes. This woman needs to be removed from her position for a number of reasons. Send your stories and pics about BCARL to blacksheepchronicleATgmailDOTcom.

There is a dog there now that has inoperable cancer w/ heartworms, est. < 3 mos.. Very friendly & still looks/acts OK. I offered to foster this dog until either she was adopted or passed on. Verna told me "it's impossible for you to foster because she is unadoptable". So instead of allowing this dog to spend her remaining few, incontinent months on a warm comfortable sofa, she will force this dog to spend the cold days tied to a dirty dog box in the effort to extort adoption money from me that she KNOWS she'll never get from anyone. I can confirm that some staff purposefully lie. Dog Wardens are appointed. Contact County Commissioners belccDOTcom
