Jefferson recorder charged after crash

POSTED: March 26, 2008

TILTONSVILLE — Jefferson County Recorder Paul McKeegan has found himself on the wrong side of law following a two-vehicle crash on March 21 that sent one person to a local hospital.

McKeegan, 57, was arrested after the vehicle he was operating went left of center, striking a vehicle driven by Douglass Agnew head on.

The passenger in the Agnew vehicle, his 44-year-old sister Tracy Agnew of Martins Ferry, was injured in the crash and transported to East Ohio Regional Hospital in Martins Ferry. She was treated and released according to a hospital spokesman.

According to Tiltonsville Police Chief Jerry Davis, McKeegan refused to take a field sobriety test at the scene of the crash.

“Upon arrival, the investigating officer talked to both drivers and detected a strong odor of alcohol on Mr. McKeegan,” said Davis. “He refused to submit to a field sobriety test and then later refused to undergo a breathalyzer test after being transported to the Mingo Junction Police Department. He was then arrested and eventually was transported to his home.”

According to Davis, McKeegan is scheduled to appear for arraignment on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol and driving left of center in Dillonvale Third District County Court today at 1 p.m.
