Shadyside schools gain grant monies
By MICHAEL SCHULER, Times Leader Staff WriterSHADYSIDE The Shadyside Local School District Board of Education learned at its regular meeting Tuesday the details of several grants that could prove beneficial to the school district over the next several years.
Attending the meeting were the two staff members, Holly Ging and Lorrie Stewart, who helped the district, secure a federal Physical Education Program grant.
According to Ging, a physical education program will be outlined and incorporated into the curriculum, including nutritional instruction.
There will also be another bonus.
The high school will be able to add a fitness center, complete with elliptical bikes, treadmills and other exercise equipment.
The district will also be able to offer more services because of a federal Ohio River Initiative.
According to Superintendent Terry Brinker, Shadyside Local School District will be able to offer more services at no cost to the district. Other schools included in that grant will be Bellaire Local School District, Bridgeport Exempted Village School District, Martins Ferry City School District and the Belmont Career Center.
The pre-school program is also moving forward in the district. The class will be located in Room 105 of the high school building.
In other news, problems with the track at Fleming Field continue.
Brinker said the school district has been working with the company that installed the track and they did do some patchwork, but there are still holes in it.
A core sample is to be taken to help determine the actual cause of the problem.
"They said it's the asphalt underneath that is failing," Brinker said. "A Columbus company will come and do samples and try to verify what is exactly going on."
Brinker also reported the administration has begun contract negotiations with the Shadyside Education Association union regarding wages.

Kudos to Holly Ging for working countless hours on the PEP grant that was awarded. But your reporter got it all wrong. Lori Stewart had nothing, absolutely nothing to do with helping to get this grant, and your reporter heard her say this. There were 2 other people who help Holly, but Holly did all the important work and worked on this grant for 2 years. This is exactly why I don't subscribe to your paper!!!!
