Career Center teacher honored

MAURA BIRNEY, a Diversified Health Occupations instructor at the Belmont Career Center, received the "Pacesetter Award" from the Ohio Association for Career and Technical Education - Trade, Industrial and Health Division.

The purpose of the award is to recognize individuals who have demonstrated exceptional leadership or innovative program achievements through service to the Ohio ACTE.

Birney has been a member of the Ohio ACTE for 13 years. She has been a member of the conference planning committee, legislative chair and president of the health section. She will serve as president of the trade and industrial division beginning January 2009.

The Belmont Career Center offers diversified health occupations as a two year program for juniors and seniors in high school. Junior students learn basic healh skills used in all health care occupations. Seniors will complete the state approved Nurse Aide Training Program, making them eligible for a state certification.
