Taser used in arrest of man

By MICHAEL SCHULER, Times Leader Staff Writer
POSTED: November 21, 2008

BELLAIRE police Wednesday used a Taser on a man who allegedly resisted arrest and allegedly threatened to stab himself with a steak knife.

Arrested was Brian Lee Tanner, 24, 1717 Belmont St., Apartment 4, Bellaire, who was charged with domestic violence and resisting arrest.

According to Bellaire Police Chief Michael Kovalyk, officers were called to Tanner's residence Wednesday at 4:50 p.m. after receiving a call claiming there was a domestic violence situation taking place in the apartment.

Police reported Tanner allegedly assaulted his girlfriend and broke the telephone to prevent her from calling police.

Officers Jason Weekley and J.J. Watson responded to the scene and attempted to apprehend Tanner who said he wanted to kill himself, according to the report. The officers then attempted to handcuff Tanner, who reportedly pulled away from the officers.

He then allegedly grabbed a steak knife off a bookshelf and held the knife to his throat, again saying he was going to kill himself, the report noted.

At that time, officers backed away and used a Taser to subdue Tanner and place him under arrest.

Kovalyk had high praise for the officers, saying they exercised the right judgment for the situation.

"During the holiday season, we see an increase in these types of calls, both domestic violence calls and threats from people who say they are going to harm themselves," Kovalyk said. "A lot of the time, alcohol and drugs play a part in these incidents. Stress is another factor. We are fortunate to have experienced officers like Officer Weekley and Officer Watson to handle these situations."

Kovalyk also said that those who are thinking of harming themselves or committing suicide should contact a medical facility immediately to seek counseling or speak to a member of the clergy.
