Area towns get ready to light up the night

Area municipalities that are scheduled to hold fireworks displays as part of the coming Independence Day holiday include:

Wednesday, July 1:

  • St. Clairsville, at the St. Clairsville Central Park/current Belmont County Fairgrounds.

Fireworks return to the city for the second year in a row. The celebration will be park of the St. Clairsville Recration Department's "Community Days" celebration beginning on Tuesday, June 30 and continuing on Wednesday. The events are also part of the recreation department's ongoing Summer Concert Series.

Tuesday's events will include a farmer's market and flea market, entertainment, specail events, concessions and live performance by Aftermath.

Wednesday's events will include performances by John Adams & Friends - a musical tribute to John Denver, plus a farmers market and flea market, special events, concessions, inflateables for the kids, a car show, DJ Spike Man, face painting, entertainment, and more, concluding with fireworks after dusk.

Friday, July 3:

  • Martins Ferry, at the new Martins Ferry School Campus on the hill. Gates open at 5 p.m., with fireworks starting at approximatley 9:30 p.m. Admission and parking are free, but donations will be accepted. There will be plenty of food, entertainment and activities for the entire family. See related story online.
  • BRILLIANT, varied Fourth of July activities are planned for this Friday in Wells Township.

Swimming at the pool in Brilliant will be from noon to 6 p.m., and admission is $1. That entitles the swimmer to a free hot dog, chips and pop while supplies last.

A children's parade will begin at 6 p.m. by the pool (LaBelle Street). The parade will travel from LaBelle to Kennedy, turn right on Second to Ohio and then back to LaBelle, turn right back to the pool. Trophies will be given for the best-decorated pet, bicycle and most unusual riding vehicle.

Scheduled later on a Sunday to be announced will be a baseball game between players from churches and the Little League coaches at the Buckeye Middle School softball field.

A flag-raising ceremony, presented by Brilliant American Legion Post 573, Wells Township Police Department and Brilliant Fire Department, is planned for 7:45 p.m. on the Buckeye Middle School football field, Third Street.

Ron Retzer will entertain with music, beginning at 8 p.m. at the football field. Fireworks will begin at dusk.

Rain date for the activities is July 5.

Saturday, July 4:

  • WHEELING, the Friendly City's traditional fireworks extravaganza will be sure to pack the banks of the Ohio River on Saturday night, with plenty of activities on tap at Herritage Port, plus a parade, Miss Ohio Valley competition, Wheeling Symphony Orchestra and much more.

Sunday, July 5:

  • CADIZ, will be holding a two-day celebration on both Saturday and Sunday, with fireworks closing the events on Sunday, July 5, at 10 p.m.

The festivities will take place at Sally Buffalo Park, with a craft show, flea market, food vendors, inflatables for the kids, a golf car parade cornhole tournament, live music and much more.

  • WOODSFIELD'S fireworks display is scheduled for Sunday, July 5, at dusk at the football field.

Money for the fireworks was raised through local donations.

The Woodsfield Volunteer Fire Department, one of the display sponsors, will serve chicken dinners at the firehouse that day, beginning at 4 p.m. Proceeds will go toward the cost of fireworks.
