VANDALS broke into the American Electric Power Substation in the Neffs area around 10 p.m. Tuesday, and stole copper wire and copper ground wire which caused a power outage, affecting some 1,500 customers.
Deputies from the Belmont County Sheriff's Office responded to the substation. Carmen Prati-Miller, spokesperson for American Electric Power, said initially about 1,500 people were without power.
During the night, 200 customers in the Willow Grove area had their power restored. Since then, 1,300 people along the Neffs, Glencoe, St. Joe, Dixon Hill and Key Ridge areas, as well as two schools, are without power.
Prati-Miller said power was expected to be restored to all customers sometime this morning.
She said AEP has offered a reward which leads to the arrest and conviction of the vandals.
The reward can be as much as $5,000. Information call be called to the Belmont County Sheriff's Office at (740) 695-7933 or the AEP at 866-747-5845.
