ST. CLAIRSVILLE North Star Polaris has opened a new location in the former Circuit City building at the Plaza in St. Clairsville.
In the summer of 2010, Jack Gilman, owner of North Star Polaris, entered into an agreement to purchase the vacant building. At the same time, Belmont Technical College began negotiations to purchase the original location on Ohio 331 in St. Clairsville.
"It was as if this move was meant to be," said Gilman.
NORTH STAR Polaris has moved to a new location in the former Circuit City building at the Ohio Valley Plaza in St. Clairsville. Pictured above in the sprawling new showroom with one of the many Victory motorcycles available are Michael Goclan, vice president of commercial lending at The Citizens Bank; and Jack Gilman, owner of North Star Polaris.
The two deals were finally closed recently and North Star's move was completed.
However, the past year has not been without its challenges. In January of this year, Gilman's wife of 39 years, Jane, died of cancer.
"My wife has always been my biggest supporter and most important-my partner," stated Gilman. Right when negotiations began on the deal to relocate, Jane received the diagnosis. He went on to say, "She told me to keep forging ahead. Moving forward after losing her has been difficult, but I know that is what she would want me to do."
North Star sells Polaris ATVs, Ranger UTVs, and Victory Motorcycles.
"Victory Bikes, coupled with the major growth in popularity of UTVs, is the reason we outgrew the old facility," said Gilman.
The new facility will enable North Star to display five times as much inventory as they could at their former facility.
"Victory was able to spoil the critics by producing traditional looking American motorcycles, and doing so with modern technology and at a high level of quality," stated Gilman.
Victory offers long distance touring bikes and sporty cruisers.
ATV popularity has grown over the past 15 years. The addition of the Polaris line of Ranger side-by-side UTVs had really boosted business. There is a sporty version which appeals to the sport and performance crowd, while also a large selection of farm and industrial models which can be equipped with dump attachments and other accessories.
While North Star needed additional showroom space, it had also outgrown its service department.
"We offer an attractive preventive maintenance program for all of our loyal customers. Many dealerships just want to sell a bike; we're here to offer full service," added Gilman.
Also, with the growth in popularity of The Victory and UTV lines, came the need for additional accessory and apparel space. The new building is 17,200 square feet, of which 10,000 square feet is dedicated to product display.
"While I have had my share of difficulties in making this transition, I am happy to say that the financing of this project was made easy thanks to my long term relationship with The Citizens Bank and their commercial lender Michael Goclan," said Gilman.
North Star is located at 50500 Valley Frontage Road, St. Clairsville, directly across from Outback Steak House in the plaza. The grand opening is scheduled for mid-July and special sales and incentives will be in place for the event.
