WHEELING - Enjoy the region's finest craft beers and delicious local food, great music, old and new friends, lovely zoo grounds and beautiful wild animals at the area's largest microbrew festival at the Good Zoo at Oglebay.
The Good Zoo Brew will be held on June 25 from 7 to 10 p.m., featuring over 36 beers from acclaimed brewers including Yuengling, Breckenridge, Chimay, Great Lakes, Harpoon, Saranac, and Sierra Nevada.
"Standard Distributing, a new distributor to the area, will bring six beers that have never been sold in the Wheeling area before," said John Hargleroad, director of operations for Oglebay. "We are pleased that Morgantown Brewing Company will be joining us with four styles of beer brewed in Morgantown.:
DAYNA MARTINEZ, intern at the Good Zoo; John Hargleroad, director of Operations for Oglebay, and Travis Scammell, zoo staff, from left, prepare the tasting mugs for this year’s Good Zoo Brew scheduled for Saturday, June 25.
Proceeds from the Good Zoo Brew will support the mission of the Good Zoo.
"Attending Zoo Brew is a fun and painless way to support the zoo's conservation efforts for vanishing species, and gives us needed funds for new exhibits," said Penny Miller, director of the Good Zoo.
Up to 400 attendees, who must be 21, can taste brews with local foods and listen to music, all while visiting the animals. Tickets are $35 in advance, $30 for Good Zoo, OVConnect and Oglebay Institute members, $20 for designated drivers and $40 at the door (if any are left).
Advance tickets can be purchased daily at the Good Zoo office or online at goodzoobrew.com.
Miller said each guest will receive a small souvenir tasting mug with the new Komodo Dragon logo. The mug holds five ounces and each ticket holder receives eight beer tasting samples. An additional tasting ticket for four additional samples can be purchased at the event for $6.
In addition to the great brews, delicious food will be provided by Ye Olde Alpha, River City Ale Works, Dicarlo's Pizza Warwood, Wilson Lodge Food and Beverage and Cabela's. To top off the festivities, music will be provided by two popular bands, Bridges and Wheeling Marsh String Band.
This unique fundraising event is held in partnership with OVConnect, (www.ovconnect.org) an organization of young and young-thinking business minded individuals who desire to improve the Ohio Valley region by supporting community events.
"We're excited to bring this celebration of ales, porters, stouts, and other fine beers to Wheeling. What better setting than with the animals at Oglebay's Good Zoo, for whom proceeds will benefit?" said Chad Remp of OVConnect. "There is simply no better chance to sample and learn about great beers with novice and experienced beer aficionados alike than at the largest microbrew festival in the entire Ohio Valley."
The zoo is currently open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
