There's a chill in the air, darkness creeps up on us a little earlier in the evening, and the leaves are starting to change colors. This time of year is a great time to curl up on the couch with a blanket and dig into a nice warm bowl of homemade chicken noodle soup. Or chili. Or maybe meatloaf. Or, well, why don't YOU tell us what you like to cook up for ultimate comfort?
How can you do that? It's easy! Just send us your favorite recipe for inclusion in The Times Leader's Holiday Traditions cookbook.
The cookbook is divided into six different categories: appetizers; breads; soup, salads and sides; main dishes; sweet treats; and on the simple side (speedy, simple recipes with six ingredients or less). You can submit one recipe (just make sure you tell us which category you'd like your dish to go in) or many recipes if you can't pick only one favorite.
Now comes the fun part: semi-finalists will be chosen from each of the categories, and the cooks of these recipes will then prepare their dishes during the Big Brothers Big Sisters annual Festival of Trees, which will be held at the Artisan Center at River City Brewery in Wheeling on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 1 p.m. Bring your entourage to cheer you on as you cook!
A winner and a runner up will be chosen in each category. The winner in each category will receive a $50 Riesbecks gift card, a gift basket from Kitchen Collection, a $25 Wheeling Coffee gift certificate and a $25 gift bag from Casa di Vino Wine Shoppe. Runners-up will receive a $35 Kroger gift card. In addition, one of the top submissions will be drawn randomly for a $35 Kroger gift card.
Submit your recipe in several ways: email your recipe to htrecipes@ timesleaderonline.com; visit our Virtual Newsroom at timesleaderonline.com and select the recipe button; or bring us your recipe in person or by mail to Holiday Traditions Recipe Contest, c/o The Times Leader, 200 South 4th Street, Martins Ferry, Ohio, 43935.
You need to hurry! The Oct. 28 submission deadline will be here before you know it! To be fair to all contestants, no late entries will be accepted after 5 p.m. on Oct. 28.
Be sure you include your name, address and a phone number where you can be reached during the day. We also require you tell us the category you would like us to judge your recipe. Recipes must include concise information regarding amounts, ingredients, temperatures, cooking times, preparation methods, etc., WITHOUT abbreviations. Recipes that do not include the required information will not be included in Holiday Traditions.
This year's cookoff is being sponsored by Riesbecks, Kroger, Wheeling Coffee and Casa di Vino.
So get up and send us your favorite home cooked recipe! We can't wait to taste it.
