WHEELING - "The Fabulous Bender Boys" bring the finest guitar pickin' in town to the Towngate stage as Oglebay Institute continues its Towngate Spotlight musical series at 8 p.m. Saturday, November 19 at Towngate Theatre, 2118 Market Street in Wheeling.
With two CDs to their credit, including their latest full-length recording " Partners, Brothers and Friends" these talented musicians combine old school and new country with their unique "Benderized Country" sound.
"Take Me On Back," the first single from "Partners, Brothers, & Friends" is written about a family that moves from the Ohio Valley to seek better jobs and then returns for a visit years later. It explores the passion and connection the family members still feel for their Ohio Valley home as they remember their days growing up by the Ohio River.
"Take Me On Back" is receiving airplay on 98.7WOVK along with other Bender Boys' original tunes "Too Much Month at the End of the Money," "Beer Pressure" and "Same Shift Different Day," which have become popular country anthems throughout the Ohio Valley and beyond.
"The Fabulous Bender Boys" have more than 100 years of combined experience. Members include Roger Hoard (Buck Bender) on lead guitar and vocals, Jim Miller (Butch Bender) on lead guitar, mandolin and vocals, Chad Smith (Buster Bender) on drums and vocals and Mike Mazure (Buzz Bender) on bass guitar.
The band based its name on the unique "bender" style guitar playing that is similar to the playing styles of Ricky Skaggs, Steve Wariner and Marty Stuart. In fact, you may wonder where the steel guitar is hiding. However, what you are actually hearing is "Buck" or "Butch" pulling down on their guitar neck or pushing the guitar away from them to activate the steel guitar mechanism.
Soaring vocal harmonies and a rock solid rhythm section complete the "Fabulous" package, so you're sure to hear some mighty fine pickin' and singin'.
Don't miss "The Fabulous Bender Boys" at 8 p.m. November 19 at Towngate Theatre.
Tickets are available at the door only. Call 304-242-7700 for more information.
