WHEELING -At the 2011 Sundance Film Festival, the romantic drama "Like Crazy" captured the Grand Jury Prize and a Best Actress Prize for newcomer Felicity Jones. It will be shown this weekend only December 30, 31 & January 1 at Oglebay Institute's Towngate Cinema.
An inventive and irresistible tale, "Like Crazy" beautifully captures the ups and downs, euphoria, sacrifices and heartaches of first love.
Anna (Felicity Jones) and Jacob (Anton Yelchin) fall instantly in love when they meet as students at an L.A. university. Jacob is an aspiring furniture designer; Anna is a poem-writing London exchange student. When graduation approaches, Anna decides to stay and violate her student visa rather than returning to England. After a visit home, she is then unable to return to the United States. Over the next seven years, the lovers couple and uncouple. She takes up with Simon (Charlie Bewley); he grows close to Samantha (a wonderful Jennifer Lawrence). And yet Jacob and Anna can't let go, but they must decide if their relationship is worth the distance and the hardship.
The acting in the film superb, making it a cut above the scores of romantic dramas that are released each year. Yelchin and Jones have chemistry, and they play it across the board. You will smile, laugh, cry and hold your breath as these two characters waltz in and out of each other's lives. Critics are dubbing Jones' portrayal of Anna as a "breakthrough performance." Jennifer Lawrence and Charlie Bewley also deliver great performances.
Rated PG-13 "Like Crazy" will be shown at 7 and 9 p.m. Friday, December 30; 4, 7 and 9 p.m. Saturday, December 31 and 2 and 4 p.m. Sunday, January 1.
