It was raining threes inside St. Clairsville High School Tuesday evening.
The Red Devils drilled a season-high 14 shots from beyond the arc and were never challenged in posting a convincing 90-62 victory against struggling John Marshall.
"We couldn't make that many threes if we were the only ones on the court," said Monarchs' head coach Bill Storm. "Wow, could St. Clairsville shoot them."
ST. CLAIRSVILLE’S Dan Monteroso makes a move in the lane against John Marshall during Tuesday’s game. Monteroso scored 35 points to lead the Red Devils to a 90-62 victory.
On top of drilling all of those shots, the Red Devils (10-2) were highly efficient, committing just four turnovers, which was the most satisfying part for their head coach, Kim Clifford.
"If we throw them in, we're pretty efficient and we were throwing them in," Clifford said. "Every one tries to focus on Dan (Monteroso) and Riley (Carlton), but the other guys are efficient enough to make you guard them."
The Red Devils had seven different players dial long distance, including four of the five starters hit at least two triples.
"Our defense was just horrendous," Storm continued. "We normally don't play that poorly on defense. A lot of the game, we were playing man-to-man and they were still hitting threes in our face, so that shows the intensity we played with on defense."
The Red Devils wasted no time in establishing themselves as junior Dan Monteroso scored 10 points and St. C. connected on five triples in the first quarter, including a Riley Carlton buzzer beater for a 22-15 lead at first quarter break.
"We're small, so we have to spread things out to make teams come get us and that opens things up for our shooters," Clifford said.
Monteroso, who did everything but sell popcorn and take tickets, netted 14 of his season-high 35 in the second quarter. On top of his scoring production, Monteroso passed out 10 assists, snagged six rebounds, had four steals and for good measure had a fierce two-handed dunk in transition.
"The main thing in this game was they had Monteroso and we didn't," Storm said. "If I am starting a high school basketball team, I am taking (Monteroso) with the first pick, and we've played against (Jared) Adrian of Morgantown, who's verbaled to WVU already."
The Red Devils were in total command at the intermission, leading 46-26. John Marshall got within 17 after three, but didn't get any closer as junior Adam Jeffries buried two triples early in the fourth and Clifford eventually subbed freely.
Jeffries was Monteroso's top support with 16 points. Junior Jerrid Marhefka added 14. Carlton finished with nine tallies. Junior Jared Burghy also provided a spark with two triples.
"I would say this (game) ranks right up there for our best offensive performance," Clifford admitted. "I liked the other night at Union Local because we did it on the road. Our last two games we've scored 101 and 90. We're not holding onto the ball long enough to turn it over."
Senior Justin Wade was an absolute handful for the Red Devils on the interior. He scored 23 points and collected seven rebounds to lead the way for the Monarchs.
"On the bench, we were talking about trading threes for twos, but geeze o' weeze, (Wade) was getting uncontested layups," Clifford said. "He's a tough guy to get around and had a nice game."
However, JM struggled consistently to get the ball into the 6-ft-5 Wade because of the 21 turnovers it committed.
A Jared Derosa trey just before the buzzer lifted St. C. to a one-point win in the reserve contest.
