COLUMBUS - The Associated Press announced its all-Eastern District boys' and girls' basketball teams Wednesday.
The All-Eastern District teams are picked by a panel of media members throughout the district. The all-Ohio teams will be announced during the week of the respective state tournaments.
Two area players - St. Clairsville junior Dan Monteroso and Shadyside junior Karli Bonar - earned Eastern District Player of the Year honors for their fine seasons.
Monteroso - a second-team all-Ohioan in Division III a season ago - earned the top honor in Division II after a brilliant junior season in which he scored almost 27 points a game.
Along with scoring, Monteroso averages 11-plus rebounds a contest and surpassed the 1,000-point barrier for his career earlier this season.
Bonar has had an impressive season for Coach Tina Yates' Lady Tigers running the show at point guard.
The 5-6 bundle of talent averages better than 17 points a game and has drilled 98 triples thus far and finds herself just five shy of the OHSAA record entering Friday's Division IV District title game against Hiland.
Indian Creek's Joe Dunlevy was named coach of the year in Division II. He guided his Redskins to a 15-5 regular season and they'll play East Liverpool in the sectional co-final at OUE on Saturday. During the course of the season, Indian Creek was faced was adversity as several of its student-athletes were involved in a serious automobile accident. Dunlevy held the team together and it eventually advanced to the OVAC 5A title game.
Indian Creek freshman Bre Berryman - the talented 6-ft-5 post player - notched Division II girls' player of the year honors after averaging a triple-double this season. She averaged 25 points, 17 boards and 11 blocks for the season.
Edison's Tony Kovalesky, who has already announced his retirement, was named Division II girls' coach of the year. He guided the Lady Wildcats to the OVAC Class 4A and Buckeye 8 titles during a 19-3 campaign.
