Buckeye girls rebound to blank Central

No lead is ever safe. As Joe Soos and his Buckeye Local softball team painfully discovered Monday.

After surrendering 11 unanswered runs in a 15-9 loss to Martins Ferry, the Lady Panthers were anxious to put Monday's disappointment behind them.

In Tuesday afternoon's home field matchup against Wheeling Central, Buckeye quickly mounted a five-run lead which on this day, proved more than enough.

Seniors Angela Primovic and Dana Bettineschi led the way in a 6-0 Lady Panthers' triumph. Buckeye improved to 6-4 with the Maroon Knights falling to 5-6.

"Before the game, I just told the girls, 'Monday's over. We can't fix it, so go out and play your game.'" Soos described.

Primovic spun a five-hit shutout and Bettineschi blasted a three-run homer to key Tuesday's triumph.

"We needed that," Soos exclaimed. "We've let a couple late leads get away so this one was big. Angela gave us a definite boost with her performance. I thought she kept their hitters off balance all afternoon."

Central starter Madison Basinger worked herself into early first inning trouble, issuing consecutive walks to Aliyah Morelli and Taryn Tonkovich.

That brought on Bettineschi who clubbed a three-run homer to leftcenter. Freshman Kierstyn Czuchran drew another free pass and came home when Tori Nest drilled a double. Junior Kaylee Decesare capped the frame with an RBI base knock that plated courtesy runner Jessi Faulkner.

Buckeye tacked on one more run in the second frame when Bettineschi belted a double and scored on a Karlee Leonard base knock.

Primovic, meanwhile, scattered five hits and exercised good control, striking out six Knight hitters and allowing but one walk.

Central reliever Sarah Henry, coming on in the first frame, also pitched well in relief. Henry and teammate Laken Visnick collected two-base hits for the Maroon.

Both teams were scheduled to see action this afternoon with Buckeye hosting Steubenville Big Red and Central facing Union Local at Morristown.
