Buy Local

May 9, 2012

Dear Editor,

In these tough economic times, it is more important now, more than ever before, to buy and support our local businesses. Our local businesses are constantly bombarded with requests for donations from various civic and non-profit organizations and they always continue to support our local projects.

A prime example of how our local businesses support our community is the recent renovations to our city park, the state of the art playground and the Fodor Field projects. All of these plans are no longer just a dream, but a beautiful centerpiece of our town thanks to the outstanding and generous support of our business community.

Our friends, family and neighbors that own and operate our local businesses give generously of their time, talents, resources and finances to improve and support our city.

Now is the time for all of us to show our appreciation to our local stores by supporting their business.

We, as residents of Martins Ferry, need to make a more conscious effort to buy and support Martins Ferry businesses first before shopping elsewhere. Take the time to compare prices and ask your local store owner if they can order what you may specifically need and you may find their prices are better than the big box stores. Our local businesses need our financial support to help keep their business doors open in our community and to keep our downtown store fronts filled. Our local store owners have always been there when we asked them for support and now it is time for us to be there for them.

In closing, I want to personally thank all the businesses that have chosen to locate, operate and donate to Martins Ferry, that have helped to make us successful over the years. I believe we all need to do a better job, including myself, of supporting our local businesses to make sure they remain open and successful.

May we all make a more conscious effort to shop in Martins Ferry first and if you can't find it in town then shop in Belmont County and keep our tax dollars here.

Sincerely,

Paul Riethmiller

Mayor of Martins Ferry
